Xie-xie

Been a while since I last posted here. Somewhere along the way, real life (moved house, got married, et cetera, et cetera) caught up with me. Am just happy that things are slowly returning to its old way.
---
Alrighty then, last Saturday my T and I decided to take advantage of the calm before the storm (Typhoon Ramil expecting to hit the northern part of country this midweek) and headed off to the Manila Chinese Cemetery. One bus ride and two train transfers after we finally reached our destination. We used the south gate as the one in the north is almost always close. We were greeted by two guards who, in a way, insisted that we use the services of a tour guide which was not really a bad thing considering the cemetery is about 60 hectares and the chances of missing the really interesting places was pretty high should we decide to wander on our own. Our guide was also a caretaker of the mausoleums inside. He's 62 years old and he (claims that he) was born in the cemetery (that totally freaked me out!)

Now for a little background: The Manila Chinese Cemetery is the second oldest in Manila and was the resting place of the Chinese citizens who were denied burial by the Catholic church during the Spanish occupation. It is considered the City of the Dead. Its mausoleums are lavish and come with almost all creature comforts that we know of (home furnishings, A/C, etc.).

One thing I found weird was the altar of Buddha, the Virgin Mary, Confucius and other famous religious leaders. Some practitioners may find that juxtaposition a little strange but I think the subliminal message there was that there is no need for religious wars. (My apologies for the blurred image below. It was almost sunset and we were losing good light.)

Kilometer Zero

Situated at the west of the Rizal monument, this flagpole (also known as kilometer zero) is the point of reference from north and south of the country and where all road distances are measured from.

What's your story?

Magaling magkwento ang mga Pinoy.
Manuod ng mga kakaibang istorya ng pangkarinawang buhay
na pupukaw sa isip at damdamin.
Ano'ng kwento mo?

On its fourth year, Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival will be showcasing ten full-length and ten short films. Roxyfoxy and Parisianinpinas went with me yesterday to CCP to catch 100 by writer and director Chris Martinez. It is a story of a "stern, uptight and exacting woman with a terminal illness who tries to accomplish a list of 100 things to do before she dies." Sure, the story is nothing original but what I really liked was that it was told in a very light manner. You don't leave the movie house with a heavy heart but with a new outlook towards life.

At the ground floor was a little exhibit. And in there, one thing immediately caught my attention. In this day and age of flat/LCD/plasma TV screens I find that bulky red box strangely comforting. Childhood reminder of afternoon entertainment.

Fête de la musique 2008 - Pinoy style

While the rest of the Fête de la musique community is celebrating music with the glorious sun (summer solstice), we here are trying our very best to distinguish the drums from the thunder and the stage lights from the lightning. It is difficult to take pictures and videos of the performers while making sure that your precious camera stays dry.

This year's Fete was held at SM Mall of Asia. This fountain was close to one of the stages by the bay. See how they all move to one direction? Thanks to the strong winds. Typhoon Frank is bad.

Make music

Its a lazy weather. The rain is intermittent and traffic is a pain. I am seriously weighing my options on whether to go to the Fête de la Musique or not. I have been going to this wonderful sonic soiree for the past 5 years and somehow the idea of missing it this year is not that appealing to me. Oh well. In the meantime, here is a photo of a fellow Fete fan. Photo was taken June 23rd of last year.

Quit Coal

Last week, I got an email invite from Greenpeace for their Open Boat Day. The Rainbow Warrior will be in the country and her captain, Mike Fincken, was gracious enough to give the attendees a special tour of the ship. Lots of people were able to make the event. Even little children were there to support the group's fight for clean and renewable energy. More photos here.
